چکیده

DRIFTS, was used to study small organic molecules, with and without functional groups, adsorbed to the surface of γ-alumina and kaolinite clay from a non-polar solvent. Adsorbed water is present on the surface of both minerals and this influences the adsorption of organic molecules from, the non-polar solvent, onto the mineral surface, particularly the interaction of polar functional groups with the surface. The carboxylic acid functional group (on myristic or salicylic acid) is not dissociated in non-polar solvent, thus the presence of carboxylate bonded to the minerals indicates interaction of this polar organic functional group with the adsorbed water layer on the mineral surface. The results imply the displacement of the H from the carboxyl group being accommodated, via the water layer, by a negatively charged surface site (rather than being taken up by the hexane solvent). Carboxyl groups were also evident on some surfaces, particularly samples treated with the more highly concentrated solutions and not rinsed with fresh solvent. The washing step removed all, or a significant proportion, of the carbonyl species from the surface, supporting this group being present as a physic-sorbed layer formed by dry down. The non-polar octacosane was found after washing with fresh solvent (hexane), on the surface of kaolinite but not γ-alumina. This implies interaction with uncharged siloxane surface but not charged alumina type surfaces. This will be CHECK USING DEUTERATED OCTACOSANE It was possible to use DRIFTS spectra from a set of prepared samples to identifying the molecular density for monolayer coverage (resistant to washing) of myristic acid on γ-alumina to be in the region of 2.0 molecules per nm. This was over double that observed using salicylic acid adsorbed from aqueous solution, with the same supply of γ-alumina. The technique was able to identify myristic acid down to coverage of 0.02 molecules per nm. This was the same as the lower sensitivity observed using salicylic acid adsorbed from aqueous solution, with the same supply of γ-alumina.

Synergistic formation of sulfate and ammonium resulting from reaction between SO2 and NH3 on typical mineral dust.

The heterogeneous reactions of SO2 and NH3 on typical mineral oxides were investigated using in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). A new sulfate formation pathway was proposed where NH3 accelerated the formation of sulfate species. The results revealed that surface hydroxyls and oxygen played principal roles in the conversion of SO2 to sulfate. It was pro...

The Application of Drift Spectroscopy to the Multicomponent Analysis of Organic Chemicals

-Diffuse Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy was used to monitor both molecular interactions and concentrations of volatile organic chemicals adsorbed on a commercial montmorillonite. Chemicals tested included propanoic acid, hexanal, heptanal, trimethylamine, dimethylsulfide and dimethyldisulfide. Diffuse Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy had several advantage...

Near- and mid-infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy for measuring soil metal content.

Rapid and nondestructive methods such as diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy provide potentially useful alternatives to time-consuming chemical methods of soil metal analysis. To assess the utility of near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) and diffuse mid-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (DRIFTS) for soil metal determination, 70 soil samples from the metal mining region of Tarnows...

Role of Lewis acid sites of ZSM-5 zeolite on gaseous ozone abatement

In this work, chemical interactions between ozone and zeolite surface active sites are studied in order to propose a process for gaseous ozone removal. Synthetic ZSM-5 zeolites with three different Si/Al2 ratios and similar specific surface areas and microporous volumes were used in this study. Zeolite samples were characterised using Fourier Transform InfraRed spectroscopy (FTIR) and pyridine ...

A modified diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy cell for depth profiling of ceramic fibers.

A modified diffused reflectance infrared Fourier transformed spectroscopy (DRIFTS) accessory was used to analyze the surface properties of alumino-silicate fibers. The modifications are simple and involve a different way of performing depth-profiling from traditional DRIFTS by removing approximately 2 mm of salt from a full cup prior to placing the sample in for depth profiling. This method pro...
